Homeowners: Kenneth and Cindy Moffett
Architects: Kenneth and Marian Moffett
Year: Original 1977; Additions 2004, 2012
Location: Bearden, TN
The original house, designed by Ken Moffett and his first wife, architectural historian Marian Moffett, was built in 1977. Additions and improvements have been made several times in the intervening years. Ken, now semi-retired, was a founder and design lead of Bullock, Smith and Partners, which has done design and planning work nationwide and abroad.
Due to the 1:3 downhill slope of the wooded property, the front entry of the house is on the upper level, looking out into the crowns of trees and distant mountain views along the back of the house. The wood framed and clad upper level overhangs the masonry “plinth” of the lower level. The design employed simple details in unconventional ways in order to meet a modest budget, for example, the shed roof framed of standard gang-nail trusses turned upside down, resulting in a dramatic interior cross-section. The orientation, shading conditions and generous insulation have resulted in very low utility bills.
The music room addition, completed in 2004 and added onto in 2012, received an award from AIA East Tennessee. Ken and his second wife, Cindy Moffett, still enjoy this house in the treetops.
